The Challenge of Finding Skilled Junior Marketers
Marketing and sales managers with SMEs and charities can struggle to find junior marketers with the relevant skills, experience and work ethic they need, especially on a tight budget. But what if there was another way?
Meet Frank Reynolds, a marketing manager with decades of experience, who joined Assure UK with a clear 100-day plan to audit and overhaul an effective marketing strategy. Then came the curveball.
The surprise to me was that I was working with a Marketing Apprentice, having never had an apprentice to manage. And if I'm honest, not even knowing what a professional apprenticeship was.

From Novice to Impact: Manny's Marketing Transformation
The transformation?
Within months, Manny was delivering concrete, measurable results:
- Managing all LinkedIn campaigns for the company account and those of key employees, with content planned a full month in advance.
- Dramatically improved SEO performance: "We've gone from page two or three to positions 1, 2 or 3 on page one," Frank explains.
- Introducing video content and streamlining production: "What previously took a day for scripting and recording one or two videos with the CEO now takes just 45 minutes," says Frank, highlighting how Manny's efficiency frees up valuable executive time.
- Independently managing 18 social media posts per week across multiple channels.
- Publishing and broadcasting monthly newsletters and regular blog content.
LinkedIn is our key marketing channel, and it was already good, but Manny has elevated it further, understanding the strategic benefit it brings to the company while also integrating his flair for video. These are all skills and confidence he has gained from the Marketing Academy.

What made the difference?
The Working Knowledge team provided crucial support to both Manny and Frank throughout the journey.
For Manny, it was Sarah Campodonic, his dedicated marketing coach, who stayed with him throughout the entire 17-month programme. "Sarah was so, so helpful whenever I spoke to her," Manny explains. "She was always there for me and has really helped develop my confidence as a professional marketer."
While Frank could see two very distinct advantages from the Marketing Academy:
The quality of the trainers is fantastic. I am a marketer of many decades talking to the trainers peer to peer. I, too, was learning things, not just my Marketing Apprentice.
I naively thought an apprenticeship might have a stuffy academic approach, but the management at Working Knowledge are proactive business people who have designed a very business-friendly programme and don’t shy away from giving appropriate help where needed. I felt very supported throughout.

Integrating Apprenticeship Learning into Business Strategy
This support allowed Frank to balance Manny's development with his own marketing objectives. Rather than seeing the apprenticeship as a distraction, Frank integrated it into his Marketing Strategy.
For example, when Google Ads came up as a module in Manny's apprenticeship, Frank brought it forward in his marketing plan so that Assure UK could benefit from the expert Marketing Consultant-Trainer running that module.
As Frank comments: "If you're working with an apprentice, it's not just you who is responsible for them; you get to share that responsibility with people you can trust. You've got the Marketing Coach and Trainers from Working Knowledge supporting you in their development and their appraisal process. It can actually lighten the management load."
Frank had previously only recruited marketing graduates for junior roles, but he now sees clear advantages in the apprenticeship approach:
My experience of marketing graduates is they understand the theory of marketing but not its application. Despite this, they are very keen to tell me what to do!
With an apprentice, there is none of that arrogance since they are building their knowledge day by day. That is a better route to go. The endpoint is the same: they all know what they're doing after a year, but the apprentice was easier to get there.
Having managed both now, I think the apprenticeship route is a very valid route to go with.

Rethinking Career Paths: The Impact of Apprenticeships
The experience has been so positive that Frank is now questioning his own son's university plans: "I'm actually questioning whether he should go to university or do an apprenticeship. That's how fundamentally it's changed my point of view of what professional apprenticeships offer and the value they bring."
A Partnership for Real-World Marketing Success
The Marketing Academy doesn't just provide training; it creates a partnership that transforms both the apprentice and the business. While traditional graduate hiring often leads to theoretical knowledge without practical application, the Marketing Academy model builds marketing professionals from the ground up with real-world skills developed in your specific business context.
With expert Marketing Coaches like Sarah supporting both the Marketing Apprentice and their manager throughout the journey, businesses can develop exceptional marketing talent that matches their exact needs, often outperforming more expensive "ready-made" marketers.
As Frank's experience demonstrates, sometimes the most powerful solution isn't finding the perfect candidate but GROWING one.
